Press Release Autumn-Winter 2011/12

Chic with a difference and a new version of nature

When looking for inspiration for its Bellerose autumn-winter 2011 collection it was the dandy that was given centre stage with nods at English eccentrics and the Bloomsbury Group enhanced by designs to wrap us up warm and that exude casual and vintage influences.

Demi-teinte old-fashioned colours abound with the sublimated and faded aura of dried flowers. Soft mauves, amethyst, jade, camellia all add a muting effect to dark shades, ruby red, slate and bottle green with shards of canary yellow. A shirt over a sailor’s smock under a smooth velvet or corduroy jacket. A striking knitted tie that brightens up a men’s navy blue polka dot shirt. A long jacket in boiled wool with elbow pads made in bits of old fabric, a thin natural leather belt, a radiant Matisse blue dress. Belted pinafore dresses stripped of their traditional austerity. Patterns that break down the frontiers that have divided them in the past with hodgepodge associations of prints and checks, tartans, jacquards and stripes next to paisley prints, polka, dots or flowers. Fabrics jostle for eclectic flirting sessions between tweeds, herringbone, wool, and of course the essential knits. Ribbons and lace cling on for dear life ignoring proprieties and add an essential notion of poetry.  Bringing this romantic effect into balance is a more brutal and dense side of nature with organic and loamy oranges; the great outdoors enters in total discretion. Lead, beige, cypress and chestnut, primary colours, ecru, Delft blue and poppy red bring us the contrast that is given the added zest of fluorescent green or Fanta orange and canary yellow. Men’s trousers are worn with tailored waistcoats in thick wool.

Geometric blanket patterns, sailor stripes and lumberjack checks sidle up to tiny stars and giant dots. Denim, nylon cotton and high-tech fabrics protect against the cold and the warmth they assure is enhanced by boiled wool, cuddly big stitch knitwear and soft mohair.

The landscapes of the taiga loom in our minds like a mirage while we reconcile ourselves to winter well protected by details in fake fur, large hats, knitted muffs and check plaids.
